Hymna USA

Ačkoliv možná budete zarytě tvrdit, že hymnu USA neznáte a v životě jste ji neslyšeli, tak se s vámi můžeme vsadit, že když vám ji někdo pustí, ihned se rozpomenete. Hymna Spojených států amerických je totiž tak známá, že ji znají nejen příznivci sportovních utkání, kde samozřejmě při vítězství amerických sportovců zní. A můžeme si o ní říci řadu dalších zajímavostí.

Tušíte, jak vypadá americká vlajka? V levém horním rohu je pole s padesáti hvězdami, kolem něj třináct vodorovných pruhů. A mnoho společného s touto vlajkou, která v sobě nese několik symbolických významů, má právě i hymna Spojených států amerických. Ta totiž nese název The Star-Spangled Banner, což se dá přeložit jako Prapor posetý hvězdami.

Autoři hymny

Americkou hymnu stvořili Francis Scott Key a John Stafford Smith. První z nich, americký právník a také básník, je autorem textu, druhý zase složil hudbu. Báseň Francise Scotta Keye, která se stala právě základem pro text pozdější hymny USA, vznikla už v roce 1814. Inspirací mu k ní byla dramatická noc ze 13. na 14. září, kdy se v pevnosti Fort McHenry v Baltimoru odehrávaly ostré boje a pevnost byla z moře ostřelována. Ale odolala a Key už 17. září nechal otisknout své dílo The Defence of Fort McHenry (Obrana pevnosti McHenry). Text se ujal, takže byl otištěn znovu, jen pod změněným, dodnes používaným názvem The Star-Spangled Banner.

Vznik státní hymny

Napsat báseň je jedna věc, přidat k ní hudbu a udělat z ní populární píseň je věc druhá. Ale úplně jiná záležitost je vznik státní hymny. Ze zhudebněné básně The Star-Spangled Banner se oficiálně stala hymna Spojených států amerických až 3. března 1931, kdy o tomto kroku rozhodl Kongres Spojených států amerických, což je nejvyšší zákonodárný orgán USA.

Jelikož je tento článek o hymně USA, tak je na místě vložit sem i její text. Hymna je dost dlouhá, a tak se většinou při slavnostních událostech používá jen její první sloka.

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep.
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,

Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the Star-Spangled Banner, in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must when our cause it is just
And this be our motto: “In God is our Trust.”
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
